After several summers of beach vacations, we decided this was the year for a mountain getaway! We decided on two different main vacation stops: Estes Park, so we could stay at The YMCA of the Rockies (which was awesome!) and Vail, so we could visit Daddy's favorite place in the world! To make the very long car ride a little less daunting, we broke it into 2 days but Daddy also found some fun places for us to stop along the way!
But first, we had lots and lots of fun goody bags ready for the girls and movies galore. But this seemed to be Jillian's favorite thing to do the whole trip there and back "Hey mama, look at this!"
We took time to walk around all 14 of the "Stations of the Cross" - each told what it was that Jesus was doing at each time and also included scripture. At the end, you are led to a tomb. Very cool visual representation for the girls who asked lots of very real questions ("Why doesn't he have shoes?" and "What happened to the man that was helping him carry the cross at the last station?") so it made for some really good conversations!
There was also a gift shop and a little courtyard with this pretty waterfall and another statue of Jesus.
Just a little ways down the road, we stopped one more time - this time at the Cadillac Graveyard! We have driven past this a few times and never stopped, so this seemed like the perfect time! We almost had to postpone this stop for the way home because the weather wasn't looking so great but we ended up getting to have a little fun and then beat the big rain storm that hit. Just before we left, my co-worker tipped me off that you could take spray paint to paint the cars, so I was prepared in advance with a can of green and a can of purple!
The girls thought this was so fun!
Hard to see, but my addition to commemorate us being there: "#hankscation"
Daddy took a turn too!
Such a fun little stop!
After avoiding the storm at the Cadillac Graveyard, we definitely got our turn - it poured and poured and even hailed a bit as we drove on into New Mexico. I was driving at this point and it was probably the hardest time I had ever had while driving. Luckily, it didn't last too terribly long and we were able to get on our way. We stopped in New Mexico for dinner and it started to rain again as we were eating, we ran out to the car and started back on our way to the hotel. Then I saw this and we pulled into a grocery store parking lot to get some pictures!
There was a double rainbow that we could see from end-to-end - it was so pretty! And what a beautiful reminder of God's promise!
